Don Pedro, captain of the guard, and the Alcalde Don Jaimez, want to bring together the provinces ot San Jaun and Santa Maria into one province, to be the largest of Mexico. Santa Maria del Consuelo is trying to break the resistance of the nobles opposed to their aims.  They all suspect, rightfully so, that Zorro, a tenacious opponent and staunch defender of the people, is hiding among them, Don Pedro sets a trap for him. After having spread the word that a wagon load of money taken from the people will be transported without an escort, the captain of the guard gathers all the nobles of Santa Maria del Consuelo the home of the Alcade: if the wagon is attacked then the citizen who is absent will be identified as Zorro. But Zorro has a ploy to foil the plan of Don Pedro, who then orders that the nobles be stopped. Zorro penetrates the prison disguised as a friar, where he frees the prisoners, then, with the help of the population, he faces Don Pedro and his soldiers and manages to kill the captain of the guards.
